Did you know that your skin is the largest organ of your body?
It is a fairly important one too! Your skin protects your insides, keeps your temperature regulated, produces vitamin D when in contact with the sun and also produces antibacterial substances designed to protect you against potential infections.
We put our skin through a lot and though many of us spend time cleansing, exfoliating and moisturizing the skin on our face, and perhaps our legs, there is often a whole lot of skin that gets neglected.
Dry brushing is a simple technique that has numerous health benefits, not to mention being very relaxing and enjoyable! Here are some of the reasons why dry brushing should be part of your weekly self-pampering routine:
Improves Circulation - The process of dry brushing stimulates blood circulation which is integral to healthy muscles tone and the even distribution of fat cells. (This means it can help reduce cellulite!).
Stimulates Your Lymphatic System - The lymphatic system in your body is made up of an intricate web of lymphatic tubules. These are responsible for transporting dead cells and other waste matter from your tissues into your blood so that it can be eliminated from the body. The action of dry brushing works to stimulate this lymphatic drainage process which stimulates the flow of lymph through your body. This means that it aids in protecting the body against waste build-up that can cause inflammation and disease.
Rejuvenates Your Nervous System - Your skin is made up of a combination of nerves, glands and multiple skin layers. The act of dry brushing helps rejuvenate your nervous system by gently stretching and massaging the connective tissues. This stimulates the production of collagen and elastin fibres that keep your skin looking firm, healthy and youthful.
Exfoliates - There is the added benefit of exfoliating by sloughing off dead skin and unclogging your skin pores. It also works to stimulate sweat and oil glands that are vital to keeping your skin healthy and supple, leaving your skin looking fresh and vibrant.
Reduces Stress - The relaxing massaging effect of dry scrubbing will leave you feeling fantastic because it cleanses your skin at the same time as gently relieving muscle tension. Making it a great ‘me time’ way of relieving stress!

UNDERSTANDING STRETCH MARKS
Often when we think of stretch marks, we think of pregnancy and the obvious rapid change in size of our belly. However stretch marks are not only due to pregnancy and can happen in both men and women alike.
What causes them?
Stretch marks are often seen as bands of parallel lines along the skin, ranging from purple to light pink or grey. They are created both through the need for the skin to stretch and an increased level of cortisone being produced by your adrenal glands.
Though they are very common with pregnant woman, they can also occur in anyone who has experienced a sudden change in size, such as teenages experiancing a growth spurt, body builders who experience rapid gains or people who lose lots of weight quickly. They are more obvious in people with lighter skin and you are more likely to get them if your parent/s also have had them.
The good news is that although some people might find them slightly itchy or uncomfortable at times, they are harmless!
How to reduce them?
Often stretch marks will start to fade over time, however there are some ways in which you can reduce them.
Some strong pharmaceutical creams are used to help reduce them during the early stages, however they are not recommended for pregnant woman. Pulsed dye laser therapy and fractional photothermolysis work by encouraging the growth of collagen and elastic, yet they can be painful and can cause skin discolouration. Microdermabrasion is used to lightly remove the top layer and is useful for reducing the appearance of older stretch marks. Other lasers work to stimulate melanin in order to blend the marks in with the surrounding skin colour. Applying tanning lotion can help reduce the appearance of stretch marks by evening the skin colour.
For a more natural approach try rosehip oil which is a natural source of vitamin E. Vitamin E is an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant that helps the body deal with scar tissue which is similar to stretch marks. Many people claim that egg whites, lemon juice or even potato juice help, however there is no evidence to support these claims.
The truth is that for some people, stretch marks are just part of life. As I mentioned they often fade with time, yet often stretch marks represent big changes in our lives. Often it is a positive change and this is a beautiful thing!

Massage therapy is to the human body what a tune up is to a car. You take your vehicle to your mechanic for servicing and repairs, you need to do the same for your own body.
